There is an inscrutable thing about Sicilian adornments. a feeling that there is no such thing as innocent decoration there.
Marble is de rigueur of course, yet it’s used in the most surprising ways, be it to draw pastoral scenes in intricate curves or to compose mesmerizing baroque camouflages. The bestiary is upside-down, with fish made to look regal while leaf-tail lions are portrayed with the strangest smile. The general tone might be opulence, but it’s more than often of the faded quality, sun, dust and old age being loyal friends of the island.
Delicacy can have a terrible air it seems.
