The ancient city of Anuradhapura might be ruins, but its temples are still holy places, which means that going in there barefoot is still very much an obligation. But, see, at this time of the year the Sri Lankan sun is making the stone burning-hot, turning the crossing into a challenge for our untrained Western feet. Once you manage to get inside though, the peaceful darkness and the flickering lights almost make you forget that a minute ago you were jumping on stones like a madman.
