The detail : Ballarò market, Palermo, Sicily

Ah, the joys of wandering on markets looking for the weirdest/prettiest thing on sale. My first guess on today's picture was shellfish, then I thought it looked a lot like snails (which Italians do eat according to Google, I thought that was only a French thing), yet I don't see any creatures coming out of their shells, which leaves me wondering. Whatever it is, it's displayed on marble, which seemed like a curious luxury on a popular Palermo market, but then again, this is Sicily, marble is like formica to them.
The Ballarò street market is considered to be one the most authentic in Palermo.
