In situ : Itamaraty Palace, Brasilia, Brazil

I’m in the central hall of the Itamaraty Palace in Brasilia, which happens to house the the Ministry of Foreign affairs, but that’s the last thing on my mind at this moment. We’re alone in the gigantic room, and the stretched out space, the flat marble curves, the exotic foliage in the background and the velvety penumbra are completely mesmerizing me. Our guide would like us to move on the next room but nothing seems to be able to get me out of this modernism-induced torpor. I could stay there for hours. That was the first time architecture actually made me shiver, the space moved me in a very physical way.

After passing through here, who could still say that modern architecture is cold?

The Itamaraty Palace was designed by Oscar Niemeyer in 1960.

C’est le hall central du Palais d’Itamaraty à Brasilia, qui est accessoirement le siège du Ministère des Affaires Étrangères, mais à ce moment ça semblait être un détail à cet instant précis. Nous étions seuls dans cette pièce gigantesque et cet espace infiniment étiré, les courbes de marbre au ras du sol, les feuillages exotiques dans l’arrière-plan et cette pénombre de velours m’hypnotisaient complétement. Notre guide nous intimait poliment de passer à la pièce suivante mais rien de semblait pouvoir m’arracher à cette fabuleuse torpeur. J’aurais pû rester là des heures. C’était la première fois qu’une architecture me faisait vraiment vibrer, cet endroit avait vraiment une incidence physique sur moi.

Après être passé ici, qui pourrait encore croire que l’architecture moderne est froide?
